You are familiar with canoe paddles, but did you know that making one is not as difficult as it seems? During this weekend at Menogyn, you will create something both beautiful and functional as you carve your own paddle from a single board of birch wood. We will begin with teaching paddle anatomy and design. Participants can create their own paddle from an existing standard template or create their very own design. Using a variety of hand tools—from block planes to spoke shaves to gauges and carving knives, participants will gradually shape the paddle from blade to shaft to handle. We will be able to add decorative touches to each paddle and then end the class by putting on a protective finish.

Participants in this course will have meals and lodging provided by Menogyn. You will arrive at Menogyn on Thursday evening after dinner between 6pm-8pm and depart on Sunday at 11am. Throughout the weekend, there will be time available to venture into the Boundary Waters on your own, or you can join a day trip guided by Menogyn staff.

Course open to adults and youth 12 years or older accompanied by an adult. No tool or woodworking experience necessary. Menogyn will provide all tools needed. If you have any questions, please reach out to Tyler.Bleeker@ymcanorth.org.
